Coaster with Mungubala painting by June Djiagween

For the Bardi-Jawi and Yawuru tribes it is not typical to paint with dots, so this painting is a contemporary interpretation of bush healing.

The main thought behind this painting is that everything comes from the center. Therefore, the center of this painting represents the center of the earth. The teardrop shaped berries in the middle is Gubinge (also known as Cacadu Plum) symbolizing the center of the earth. They highlight the importance of the water through their color, and the healing power that the Gubinge has. Around the center there are sacred Gubinge trees, which gather healing from the center of the earth and spread it to the surroundings. All the remaining dots are different kinds of bush tucker. The red dots are Mummajud, the round white dots are Gooel and the long white ones are Mungubula berries, which start as white round fruits and grow into a long shaped fruits.
